In May 2008, my financial future was, shall we say, a little unpredictable. Six months previously, myself and my husband had been made redundant from our steady, full-time, salaried jobs, leaving us with no certain income for us and our daughter, aged three and our twin boys, aged six months.
I saw this as an opportunity to break out of the corporate world, and pursue goals of starting our own businesses. Doing what though? I had the will, but not the skill.
I started an online marketing business and my husband started to train as a driving instructor – a process he believed would take around 6 months, but actually took four years.
Finding My Business
Then I saw it. An advert that changed our lives. The Body Shop at Home™ were recruiting Consultants to earn commission by selling products. Just perfect! I’d always loved The Body Shop’s ethics and their products, and I could work in the evenings when the kids were in bed, earning some extra income to be able to see us to Christmas.
Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) told me I was too busy to take this on. Some even said that I needed to find a ‘proper job’. But something told me not to listen.
Loving My Business
From my very first party, I LOVED this business! It was fun, social, the products were great quality and loved by so many people, and I was on a roll booking two parties each week to help with the family finances. It also got me out of the house and helped me to find a bit of me again (in fact, I’d say that The Body Shop at Home helped me to BECOME me, but more about that in a later blog).
I loved the fact that I could choose my own hours, got to play with amazing products and meet new people. I loved that I could set my own goals and go for them. I loved the fact that the family could get involved too.
I was on a roll! Christmas passed and there was no way I was leaving this amazing. We’d come to appreciate the additional income from me doing the Body Shop parties and taking orders from friends and family (this was before the days of selling via social media) and I couldn’t just walk away from that, no matter how busy I was.
Growing My Business
So, I spent the next few years working hard at both businesses, juggling family life and responsibilities and, whilst I loved what I was doing, I was becoming more and more tired.
Five years into my journey, the signs that I was reaching the limits of what I could fit into a day started to show. I was working into the early hours, starting early the next morning, and squeezing family life in where I could. I could barely lift my head from the pillow in the mornings. Something had to give.
Now, I’m a great believer in going with your gut feel and listening to your heart. It was a difficult decision to close my online business, but my heart wanted to give The Body Shop at Home™ my very best shot.
Committing To My Business
My decision was made and from that moment I’ve never looked back. I’ve advanced through the compensation plan at a steady rate, taking every opportunity to learn along the way and bringing people through the ranks with me. Every single day is different. Every individual’s goals are different. Opportunity is there for the taking – you just need to make a plan and go for it. I’m so glad I did.
From day one my motivation was the best possible future for our family. I couldn’t imagine living with three teenagers in our small 3-bedroomed semi (in my mind, they would become tall teenagers, towering over me, and we’d be falling over one another. I wasn’t wrong on the tall part – these boys seem to grow faster than bamboo!). In 2013 we moved to our forever home, in a location that we’d only dreamed of being able to afford
to buy in. I’m not saying that we were financially comfortable by that stage – that was to follow – but we could just about get by. Hard work and energy got us into that home, and that same hard work and energy would see our lives change as we progressed through the following years.
But, as the saying goes, hard work always pays off, and I’ve seen too many people to mention benefit from the fruits of their labour over the years, which fills my heart with joy. I simply love to see people succeed.
